If you've got kindergarten through fourth grade students, and are looking for unit study material for geography, hold on to your hat and get ready for Galloping the Globe! Loree' Pettit and Dari Mullins have written this great resource to introduce children to the continents and some of their countries.
Published in 2002 by Geography Matters, Inc., this 240 page book is designed to be completed in one to three years, depending on how much time you spend on each topic. And for each continent, there are suggestions and topics galore.
Galloping the Globe encompasses eight areas:
- People/History of the region
- General Reference Books that give info about the topic
- Literature from, set in, or about that country
- Science topics including fauna and flora
- Music/Art/Projects give students a hands-on chance to experience another country's culture using readily available materials.
- Internet Resources include web sites containing info, pictures, activities, etc.
- Bible references tie in to character traits, science, or other areas of each country's culture.
This softbound book contains an easy-to-use table of contents and straight-forward instructions. Literature suggestions should be largely available through your local library, so you won't be over-spending your book budget. Students build their own notebooks over the length of the course. Pettit and Mullins offer notebook suggestions throughout the course, and the manual is full of activity and map sheets that are reproducible by the original purchaser for personal, household use. In addition, you can join their online user group to share unlimited ideas of how others use this curriculum.
Galloping the Globe is well laid out—grouping resources, activities and notebook suggestions at the beginning of each section, followed by the pertinent reproducible sheets, vocabulary words, etc. Printed on good quality paper, the maps and other pages are crisp, clear, and visually interesting.
This innovative resource is available for $24.95—not unreasonable for a three-year geography course that offers a whole lot more than just maps! So if you've got students in grades K-4 and prefer the unit study approach, here's your chance to leap into the saddle and enjoy Galloping the Globe!
