Ministry Calls

By Maribeth Spangenberg (Contact)

And whatever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord, ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.
Col. 3:23-24

"Ministry calls," I said to my husband, as I rolled over in bed to face the outside world. The alarm had sounded a half hour before, giving me time to get oriented, and to pray for my family before rising.

I gently laid aside the covers and slowly emerged from its warmth.

"I hope you know that took determination and purpose," I jokingly said to my husband, while taking my first step of the day. I headed for the side window and raised the blinds to reveal the bright sun of a beautiful, spring day.

Suddenly, the surprise and reality of my own words hit me!

Mothering is not just a job. It is a calling, a ministry of raising children for God’s Glory. If viewed in that light, then we know that we are answerable to a higher authority. How we approach our ministry – our attitude, thoughts, and actions – will determine if our ministry is pleasing to the Lord.

And if our ministry is pleasing to the Lord, then we will have His grace and help to perform it in HIS Power.

Dear mother, raising children is an honor and a privilege. Since the Lord is the One Who opens and closes the womb, then children truly are a gift from Him. As a gift, we need to treasure it, take care of it, and do our best to preserve it. In so doing, God’s gifts will also become our inheritance.

What a rich inheritance we can have, if we raise our children for the Lord!

So, when ministry calls each morning, give your day to the Lord. Spend time in prayer. Read His Word to gain strength and direction. And then step out in HIS Power, "For ye serve the Lord Christ."

Prayer: Thank you, Father, for the tremendous blessing of Motherhood! It is surely a ministry with rewards! Please give me YOUR wisdom and direction, to do it to the best of my ability in YOUR strength!
