Freedom By Choice
. . . Jesus saith unto him, then are the children free.Matthew 17: 26b
Driving through the "blinking light, school zone" reminded me that not all children had completed their academic year. As homeschoolers we had closed our books a good three weeks ago. My children and I were already enjoying the summer. It is one of the "perks" of homeschooling – the ability to start and stop our school when it best suits our family.
Not only is it a "perk" but it is a freedom. In heeding God's Call to assume responsibility for our children's education we are also given a tremendous amount of freedom, which results in many blessings.
- We have the freedom to choose God honoring curriculum.
- We have the freedom to choose curriculum that fits our children's needs.
- We have the freedom to cater curriculum to our child's interests.
- We have the freedom to eliminate "twaddle" i.e. the unnecessary.
- We have the freedom to plan our days and adjust our schedules.
- We have the freedom to move forward or slow down the pace of learning.
- We have the freedom to deviate from our schedules.
We have the freedom to educate our children according to God's Plan for their lives. Opportunities to cultivate interests and to enhance skills abound. They are not dictated by a 9-3 class schedule, nor must they be catered to the status quo.
Our children are not herded like cattle into a classroom setting. They are not forced into a box for the good of the crowd. Homeschooling allows our child to be the individual that God intended him/her to be. With no comparison and no peer pressure, there is no determent.
Blinking light zones may slow down my speed for driving, but they increase my praises to God for the freedom that He has given me in the calling to homeschool. The privilege for freedom in my children's education is something that I will never take for granted.
Prayer: I thank you, Lord, for the freedom to homeschool my children! I pray that I never take it for granted. I seek Your Grace to use this freedom wisely, for the good of my children, and to accomplish Your Purpose in each of their lives.
