Need Encouragement? Look Behind You!

By Kari Lewis on February 22, 2018

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you don’t know what to do?  I certainly have (actually more often than I like, in fact!).  And, I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one this happens to!

Sometimes we find ourselves in a place where we don’t know where to turn.  It could be that too many paths are branching off from where we are right now.  On closer examination, we are dismayed to find that there is no clear winner.  In fact, it can look like many of the paths, if not all of the paths, look pretty much equal.  How in the world do we decide what to do?

Or we may find ourselves in a situation where we can’t see any path ahead.  We can’t see that we have any choices.  We can’t see how it can work out.  No matter how we look at it, the way looks difficult.  Scary. Painful. Hopeless.

If you’ve been a Christian for any length of time at all, a good way to move ahead may be to look backward!  I’m serious, look behind you.  Look at your past.  But to get the help you need, you need to be sure that you’re looking for the right things when you look back!

What we should be looking for when we look back, is God’s fingerprints, His leading, His blessings in our past.  When we prayerfully look back in this way, we see that He has led us through other difficult times.  He has known the path we should take when we’ve been totally confused.  He has found a way to get through our thick heads and stubborn hearts to show us His way.  And, we realize that we have made it through some difficult times and have gained spiritual depth and growth—and even good endings in an earthly sense, too!

And you know what?  That visible knowledge of His sovereignty, His power, His direction, in our yesterday’s can be powerfully used to help us rest in Him for our todays!

The Bible tells us that He never changes, He never slumbers, and He never leaves us or forsakes us.  Therefore, we can trust that He is working in our present, even if we are not seeing it in the moment.  He does have our path mapped out and He is powerful enough and loving enough to lead us in that path, whether we see it in this moment or not!

Do you need encouragement today?  Look behind you!  And hey, tell us about some of the ways God has led you or helped you—it could be a real encouragement to others as well as an encouragement to you!
