Walk With Me to the Nativity: A Journey to Bethlehem
Reviewed by Michelle Connolly
Walk with Me to the Nativity is Part 1 in a series of family devotionals by Karen Harper. It is a Christmas study for all ages and stages, offering a plethora of learning points. Included is a timeline with friendly and understandable icons which enable the user to “see” time as it unfolds. The Christmas story is shared in a fresh, lovely, and young-user-friendly way, with Scripture references aplenty. A daily “Time to Consider” follows the story and offers abundant opportunities for personal reflection and discussion as well as encouragement for prayer time. Full-color fine art embellishes the pages and brings to life new images of the accounts of Scripture. “Time to Imagine” is the cherry on the sundae of this wonderful devotional book, pulling threads from each section and tying them in a nice bow by providing thoughts and ideas that come through meaningful discussion.
This devotional book does not disappoint. We loved the timeline, which can be colored and embellished as the story unfolds, duplicated in a large format and used as a Christmas banner or decoration, or used as a countdown calendar. It gave the younger ones something to look forward to in “decorating” or coloring each time we read a section. As you work through this curriculum, the icons reinforce a visual time experience. They are the same on each page, but with a progressive focus.
It was a joy to teach the children art appreciation amid the Christmas story. Beautiful images adorn the pages of this book and draw the eye to engage in a deeper way with the book itself. We also implemented geography into this devotional experience by using a map to track the journey. The opportunities for discovery of the truth of Scripture, paired with discussions on multiple levels about various topics, make this devotional book a hit with our family. We would highly recommend Walk With Me to the Nativity to everyone.
